Knowledge Cumulation

Studying Knowledge Cumulation – with a focus on Enviromental and Sustainability Governance Research

Team: Jens Newig, Michael Rose

The project received seed funding by Leuphana University.

In our work, we are interested in how environmental governance research can better accumulate knowledge across cases, contexts, and disciplines. We began by outlining some foundational ideas in a 2020 article in Environmental Policy and Planning, where we propose a framework for understanding different modes and challenges of cumulation in the field. The wider context of our knowledge cumulation initiative is briefly explained in this blog post from 2020.

To support this agenda, we initiated the Taskforce on Knowledge Cumulation within the Earth System Governance network, bringing together scholars from around the world to exchange ideas and approaches.

As part of this effort, we have curated a Special Issue on Knowledge Cumulation in Environmental Governance Research in Environmental Policy and Governance. Our own empirical research, which has received seed funding by Leuphana University, studies how and to what extent knowledge cumulates in the Earth System Governance Community.
