Jelto Makris is a PhD researcher in the project Sustainability Governance of Global Value Chains (go-Chains) and has been a member of the research group Governance, Participation, and Sustainability at Leuphana University since April 2025.
His current research examines how supply chain regulations shape social, economic, and environmental outcomes in producing countries, with a particular focus on resource-based sectors in Latin America. Moreover, he explores how contextual and institutional factors influence the effectiveness and equity of value chain governance.
Before joining Leuphana, Jelto worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), and the Transnational Institute (TNI), contributing to projects on high seas fisheries management, climate change impacts on aquaculture in Peru, and conflicts between industrial and small-scale fisheries in Europe.
He holds a dual MA degree in Development Studies and Political Science from Sciences Po Paris and Freie Universität Berlin, as well as a BSc in International Relations from Leiden University studying a semester at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
